When it comes to lighting fixtures there are endless options. You can feel overwhelmed at the number of choices as well as happy because you are certain to find something suitable for your needs. You can even enjoy mixing and matching the lighting fixtures. Every room in the house differs in terms of lighting requirements, so first get to know the space that needs illuminating. Here are other factors to consider from 10,000 feet to mix and match as well as narrow your options.

  • Light type – Ambient, Accent, Task
  • Material – Silver, gold, brass, chrome, bronze, aluminum, black, wood, nickel
  • Style – Contemporary, crystal, traditional, country, rustic, tiffany, tropical, commercial, transitional, craftsman
  • Finishes – Aged, satin, distressed, polished
  • Fixture type – ceiling flushed, semi-flushed, pendants, chandeliers, rail, recessed, under cabinet, sconces, floor lamps

Mixing and matching lighting fixtures is a big NO. Even if people say you must not hesitate to experiment there are some things to consider. You need to determine what ambiance you want to create in the room.

Do’s

Create focal point

Choose a single light fixture as a focal point. It can be a unique lamp or a spectacular chandelier. For example, you can choose the glass orb chandelier from Sofary. You can choose from a range of opulent classics to modern designs. If you are unsatisfied then return the item within 30 days and receive a full refund.

The focal point can even be the fireplace or an artwork, where you can use track lighting or wall sconces to complement it. Never distract from the focal point.

Layering

For a well-lit space, it is necessary to create lighting layers. Layers will help to set the mood, illuminate function and create dimension. The space will look versatile. Include a minimum of two light kinds – ambient and the task or ambient and accent or task and accent.

The lighting layers need to be controlled separately. It gives flexibility in terms of feel and functioning to the installed lighting fixtures.

Coordinate across rooms

In an open floor layout, there is a limited barrier, which doesn’t mean every style and finish needs matching. The feel of the space has to be cohesive. If you choose a country style in the living room, a tropical style in your dining room, and a commercial style across the kitchen, then the spaces will look imbalanced.

Choose a single style but the fixture and lights type need to differ. It can help to create breaks and differentiate the functionality of each space.

Mix finishes

It is recommended to mix at least 2 but not more than 4 finishes in a single room.

Don’ts

  • Never get carried with the options and add many things in a single space. It can look unappealing. Go with the essential ones for illumination and generally add if necessary.
  • Choose a lighting fixture you feel you will be comfortable with every day. You don’t want to regret the investment and redo it within the next few months.
  • Never buy a light fixture that doesn’t serve the function but just look aesthetically pleasant.

Follow the dos and don’ts to create a comfy, functional, and appealing space!
