Walk the Walk in Chicago: When the whole town becomes an Artist

On Saturday, October 3rd from 10 am to 1 pm, the West Town Art Walk and Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art will present Art That Walks, a brand new immersive art making and art sharing experience. Intended for families and individuals, Art That Walks transforms the neighborhood into a living, walking work of art. Art walkers of all ages are invited to gather at the town’s Eckhart Park where they can test their own artistic creativity by making colorful masks and costumes before parading down the West Town Art Walk strip together.

Art That Walks will include a marching band and conclude with a special dance party celebration with live music.”West Town will showcase its thriving art scene at the 5th annual West Town Art Walk on October 2nd and 3rd.

Presented by the West Town Chamber of Commerce, Dovetail and Seek Vintage, this unique aesthetic festival celebrates art in all forms – visual, musical, culinary, fashion – on Chicago Avenue in the heart of West Town (from Milwaukee Avenue to Western Avenue). New features this year include a parade called Art That Walks where art walkers young and old can show off their creative chops, food trucks, local beer tastings, interactive demos, and more.

“West Town is a rich, cultural hub that is full of creativity and spirit,” said West Town Chamber of Commerce director Kara Salgado. “We are proud to highlight our diverse businesses and artists by providing art through every door.”

Throughout the free two-day event attendees stroll up and down Chicago Avenue, mingling with shop owners and other art walkers while enjoying an arts bonanza. The West Town Art Walk features everything from artistic spins on classic cocktails to full blown pop-up-galleries. The neighborhood-wide event takes place within dozens of West Town storefronts, everything from restaurants to boutiques, with free rickshaws providing aid to tired feet. Many of the participating venues also run their own exclusive promotions and sales during this time, and an official West Town Art Walk raffle for prizes will be featured – offering gifts from vendors and artists, gift cards, and even a set of tickets to “Wait, Wait. Don’t Tell Me.”

“Given the art supplies and inspiration, every person is capable of creating works of beauty and enchantment,” said artist Hugh Musick, who conceived the Art That Walks parade.

Also new to the West Town Art Walk this year is a beer and food truck tie-in. Participating Art Walk businesses will be offering specialty beer tastings from Tenth & Blake and Forbidden Root, who will we be sampling fall suds over the two day event. In addition, some of Chicago’s leading food trucks will all stage their four wheeled-kitchens along the West Town Art Walk route, offering mobile delicacies for art walkers. Food trucks will be parked along the South Side of Chicago Avenue between Hermitage and Paulina.
